Expressing deep shock over the gangrape of a minor girl in Puri town, opposition parties have lashed out at the State Government alleging that it has failed in curbing crimes against women and minor girls.
Leader of Opposition in State Assembly Pradipta Naik demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident. “One or two incidents of sexual assault cases are happing in the State every day. As there is involvement of a police official in the gang rape case in Puri, the probe will likely get derailed. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who is heading the Home department, should resign on moral grounds and a CBI probe should be conducted into the incident,” he said.
BJP Mahila Morcha president Pravati Parida said a Morcha team would meet the CM and seek answers from him as regards to rising cases of atrocities against women.
Hundreds of NSUI activists staged a rally to gherao the Naveen Nivas in protest against the incident. However, they were detained en route. Earlier, many Congress activists had also been detained while marching towards the Naveen Niwas on Monday night.
The party demanded that the trial of the case be conducted at a special court and the culprits be hanged. If the demand is not met, the party would call for a State-wide bandh under the leadership of PCC president Niranjan Patnaik, said a party release.
