The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called off its October 10 Mayurbhanj Bandh. An announcement to this effect was made here on Monday by district BJP general secretary laxmidhar Hawda.
According to party sources, the Bandh call was withdrawn in view of the district administration’s assurance to take action against the guilty in the Badsahi incident and also after taking into consideration the public inconvenience that would have been caused due to the Bandh.
The decision to this effect was taken here unanimously at a party office-bearers’ meeting held at the district party office.
During the college elections a few days ago, it may be recalled, there had been some tension between the BJP-ABVP student leaders and supporters and those of the BJD at Badsahi, 30 km from here. In an incident that followed, several BJP-ABVP youth leaders were allegedly assaulted by BJD workers, leaving some of them injured.
Enraged over the incident, the BJP had then immediately given the Bandh Call in protest against what they called “lack of immediate police action against those involved in the matter”.
But now that police have already arrested the one described as the mastermind of the incident and other absconding accused persons are likely to nabbed, the party reversed its decision, it was learnt.
