Worried over the illegal transportation of cattle, a delegation of BJP led by State unit president KV Singh Deo on Thursday met Director General of Police (DGP) Prakash Mishra at the latter’s office and sought his immediate intervention to check the practice and protect cattle population.

“Though the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, (amended), 1982, provides for award of imprisonment without fine to persons engaged in illegal transportation of animals and torturing them by overloading and beating, however, because of the laxity of the enforcement agencies, like police, the law is not implemented strongly,” said Singh Deo. “We urged the DGP to take pragmatic measures to protect cattle and check their illegal transportation. He assured us of all possible measures to curb the practice,” asserted Singh Deo. Among others, senior party leaders Manmohan Samal, Samir Dey and Niligiri MlA Pratap Sarangi ere in the panel.
