The Biju Janta Dal (BJD) grabbed the Mayor post of Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) as its candidate Sanghamitra Dalei won the seat with a huge margin.
Sanghamitra was elected defeating her nearest BJP rival candidate Sabita Suar by a margin of 20,236 votes. A total of 79,719 votes went to the BJD. The Congress was a distant third with 4,392 votes.
Sanghamitra, a three-time BeMC Corporator, expressed her gratitude to all people of the city for electing her reposing their faith in Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
“I will take Berhampur to new heights with all-round development. My focus will be health, sanitation, cleanliness and beautification of the city,” she said.
Notably, the seat was lying vacant since 2018 after the Ganjam District and Sessions Judge Court declared K Madhavi’s election to the post as null and void.
