The BJD retained its stronghold in the Puri Municipality by bagging 22 seats out of the total 32. Since 1985, the council has been snatched from the Congress.
This time, while the Congress bagged four seats, the BJP could manage to win two and Independents won four seats. The polling was only 55 per cent.
Sitting Chairperson Santilata Pradhan, senior leaders Nilu Sarangi, Bhakta Das and Sabyasachi Mahapatra are among the BJD winners.
BJD nominee Bhakta Das won by 1,200 votes, the highest margin, over his Congress rival Premanada Mohanty in Ward-16. While Das got 2,052 votes, Mohanty got 856.
In Ward-6, Damodar Mahasuar of the BJD defeated the Congress candidate by 26 votes.
In the Pipili NAC in Puri district, however, the Congress wrested the civic body from the BJD in a setback to senior local BJD MlA Pradeep Maharathy.
