BJD MlAs fail to break farmers' agitation

The Navanirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS) members, who have been staging demonstration at the lower PMG from March 18 demanding due respect and pension to farmers, have decided to continue the agitation till fulfilment of their demands.

However, the hunger strike of Sangathan State convenor Akshay Kumar and some of the farmers has put the Government in a fix. The Sangathan has threatened a massive ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation in front of the Assembly on Tuesday.

On Monday, seven BJD MlAs, including Amar Satpathy and Sashi Bhusan Behera had met the farmers’ body members at the dharna site asking them to withdraw their agitation. The Sangathan in response sought a written assurance of the acceptance its demands from the Government by Monday evening.

As no written assurance was received, the Sangathan has decided to intensify the ongoing agitation.

The organization, fighting for the cause of farmers, has been demanding pension for the farmers and to recognise the farmer suicide cases in the State.

“The Government neither held any discussion nor held a meeting on the farmers’ death issue even after fast-unto-death agitating of farmers. Under such circumstances, the appeal of the Food and Civil Supplies Minister and MlAs to withdraw the agitation is ridiculous,” said Akshaya Kumar.
