The ruling BJD has put on hold its proposed plan for a mega 500-km human chain from Hirakud to Paradip against the construction of barrages on the Mahanadi by the Chhattisgarh Government.

BJD spokesperson and MlA Sashi Bhushan Behera on Monday said that as the State Government has moved the Supreme Court seeking injunction on the constructions, the party may opt for a mass movement in future over the controversial issue.

On October 28, the BJD had announced that it would organise a human chain from Hirakud to Paradip to mount pressure on the Centre against Chhattisgarh’s act. However, the date of organisaing human chain was not fixed.

However, the party launched a signature campaign across the State and would collect signatures from 87 lakh families to be affected due to the construction in the upstream of the Mahanadi.
