In a glaring example of the deteriorating law and order situation in the State capital, unidentified miscreants opened fire at two traders and attacked them with sharp weapons near the Durga Mandap at Bomikhal under the Laxmisagar police station late on Monday night and looted the duo of their valuables.
Reports said the incident took place around 1 am while the two traders identified as Manas Mallick and Sanjay Yadav were travelling by a car. Four miscreants fired at the vehicle during which one of the victims sustained bullet injuries on his back.
The miscreants then damaged the car and attacked the two businessmen with sharp weapons besides looting gold chain and cash from the two, who were critically injured in the incident.
On being informed, the Laxmisagar police reached the spot, rescued the injured duo and admitted them to the Capital Hospital. However, one of the injured was later shifted to a private hospital after his condition deteriorated.
Though police have started investigation into the incident, the reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. Efforts were on to identify the miscreants by examining CCTV footage of nearby places.
