'Biotech a big solution to environ issues'

At a time when the whole world is facing pollution and other environment-related problems, Governments and scientists should give more focus on use of biotechnology to resolve the problems permanently.

“Scientists are now working hard to find out ways to resolve environment-related problems with use of science and technology in a permanent manner. They should give more focus on use of biotechnology as it resolves deep issues,” viewed experts at a meeting organised by the Orissa Environment Society.

Biotechnology plays a vital role in creation of new lives, enhancing food production, processing of polluted water, separating polluted elements from soil and water through bioremediation, managing wastes properly, controlling carbon level in atmosphere and effecting quality in environmental development.

Besides, use of bio plastics, bio fertilizers, bio pesticide and bio fuel can check pollution in the environment, they viewed.

Bio diesel can be produced from sphagnum that can be cultivated in seawater massively. Similarly, foods, water, soil and various parts of the human body can be tested biosensor.

Former Engineer-in-Chief Binod Chandra Padhi presided over the seminar where the KIIT University’s Biotechnology School director Prof Mrutyunjay Sudhar made a broad presentation on use of biotechnology.

At the outset, Samiti vice-president Dr lala AK Singh delivered welcome address and secretary Dr Jaykrushna Panigrahi presented a brief note on the topic.

Many environmentalists and intellectuals participated. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Samiti secretary Dr Rekha Das.
