The Sadar police stepped up the investigation of the death of a 34-year-old man, who was hacked to death by unknown bike-borne assailants at Kuruda square in the broad daylight on Sunday morning. After registering a case under sections of murder and arms Act, police intensified the probe and formed squads to nab the culprits.
Police said two unidentified youths came by a motorcycle and attacked the deceased with a sharp weapon and also fired gun shots at him, killing him on the spot. The deceased Binod Das was a native of Jagannath Patan village of Sasang panchayat. Onlookers watched mutely while the deceased was attacked.
Das was reportedly involved in antisocial activities and the murder could be due to group rivalries.
