Biju Chhatra leaders meet CM, demand polls at UU

A day after submitting memorandum to Governor Dr SC Jamir, members of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD) on Sunday sought the intervention of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik appealing him to facilitate students' union election this year at the Utkal University.

The students who met the Chief Minister at the Naveen Niwas submitted a memorandum to him seeking his intervention to revoke the decision taken by the Utkal University (UU) authorities to scrap

the polls.

"Election is important in a university to run its affairs. Cancellation of election is completely unconstitutional and undemocratic and gross injustice to the students' community," said presidential candidate Amit Kumar Jena of the BCJD. "We have urged the Chief Minister to reconsider cancellation of the election in the university and demanded that non-students be driven out of the hostels inside the university campus since they are the main reasons for recurring incidents of violence in the campus," added Jena.

He said that the Chief Minister assured them to look into the matter. On October 1, the Utkal University PG Council had upheld its earlier decision to cancel this year's election in the university. It is pertinent to mention here that, the nominations for the October 14 polls in the university was to take place on Monday. The aspirants were to file their nominations between 9 am and 12 noon while scrutiny was to be held between 2 pm and 4 pm. The final list of the candidates was to be

published on Tuesday while applicants could withdraw their application on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, unidentified miscreants hurled bombs at the boundary wall of the BJB Autonomous College on Saturday night, spreading panic among students. The incident occurred at around 10.05 pm at night when students were staying in the general hostel of the college. They rushed out after hearing the loud sound of blast. Following the incident, security has been beefed up in and around the college.

Sources said it was the handiwork of some miscreants, who had used low intensity bomb. A total of two-three bombs were hurled on the hostel boundary wall.

Meanwhile, the ABVP alleged that the code of

conduct was violated at Ramadevi Women's University as Biju Chhatra Janata Dal

candidate put up posters

carrying BJD party symbol within 100 metres radius of

the institute.
