Bid to tranquillise Sundari fails again

After attempts failed to tranquillise tigress Sundari during the overnight operation on Tuesday, the team of experts started its third phase of operation on Wednesday at the Satkosia Tiger Reserve in Angul district.

Though a massive operation was undertaken by the tranquillising team, Sundari managed to give them slip twice near Kumuri village.

Sources said Sundari was reportedly spotted in the bushes under a hill near Baghamunda village on the day, following which the team has gone near the hill to trace the movement of the tigress.

Another team has also been deployed around the hill, added the sources.

Movement of the tigress near Kumuri village has triggered panic among the local residents close to the Satkosia Tiger Reserve. Some of the villagers were seen guarding the area with weapons throughout the night while many preferred to keep indoors out of fear.

Earlier, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Sandeep Tripathy had informed that once the tigress is tranquillised and captured, it would be shifted to the special protected enclosure at Raiguda.

Sundari has, meanwhile, killed two persons and two cattle in the Satkosia Tiger Reserve, leading to massive public unrest in the area.
