A man of Bargarh had no other option than to gulp poison after his three children who were suffering from cancer died one after another despite his best efforts to provide them treatment by selling off all his properties.
Madhusudan Paika, a resident of luhurapali village of Bijepur block under Bargarh district, committed suicide not being able to bear the shock of the deaths of his children.
His three children were suffering from blood cancer and he did his best for their treatment.
He sold all his landed property. But his eldest son Soumyaranjan died first in the year 2015.
Then came the terms of his two other daughters whom Madhusudan brought to Cuttack for improved treatment, but failed. He spent nearly Rs 4 lakh for them selling his property. But the requirement was Rs 30 lakh that was just a dream for him.
For such huge expenditure, he wrote to the Prime Minister for financial assistance, but he didn’t even get a reply. Only Rs 10, 000 came from the District Red Cross and some small assistance from the State Government was availed by him which was just nominal vis-a-vis his huge requirement.
The result being after the son, his two other daughters also breathed their last one after another. “This hurt Madhusudan to such extreme extent that he lost every hope and consumed poison to end life,” informed the villagers.
Now widow Mukta is waiting for an uncertain future with only son Shyamranjan and old mother- in- law left. She doesn’t know how to manage her family without the bread earner.
When contacted, Bargarh Collector Indramani Tripathy said, “The family will be provided all helps as per norms.” Such an incident is really heartrending, he added.
