BG teachers hold huge rally in city

Thousands of Block Grant (BG) school and college teachers under the banner of the Odisha School College Milita Shikshak Sangh held a demonstration at lower PMG here on Wednesday demanding fulfilment of their demands.

Nearly 50,000 members of the Sangh, who held a peaceful protest, said for long they have been demanding equal pay for equal work and regularisation of their jobs, but the State Government is indulging in dillydallying tactics in fulfilling their demands.

They further said they have served for over 25 years with less or no remuneration. After repeated appeal and strike for long periods, the State Government extended Block Grant. But this grant has been implemented for over 10 years now with lowest payment and no service career. The teachers and employees are just treated as contract workers, they alleged. The protestors said they would continue an indefinite agitation till their demands are met.

In reaction to the teachers demand, School and Mass Education Minister Badri Naryan Patra said the Government is looking into their demands. Efforts are being made to fulfil some of the major demands soon.
