The Belpahar Railway Development Committee, a local citizens’ body, on Sunday staged a sit-in on railway tracks at the Belpahar Railway Station demanding stops for a couple of trains on the Howrah-Mumbai route.
Around 1,500 people led by Brajarajnagar MlA Anup Kumar Sai blocked the rail line for at least two hours, causing inconvenience to the thousands of passengers of Jharsuguda-Gondia Passanger, Sampark Kranti Express, Shirdi Sai Express and Ahmedabad Express trains.
Even though the activists tried to halt all trains from 6 am to 4 pm on the route, they failed to do so due to the timely intervention of Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Rashmi Goutam, Senior DEN Bhawesh Pandey and Divisional Security Commandant of Bilashpur division.
Apart from the demand for stops of Up and Down Howrah-Mumbai Mail, Geetanjali Super fast, South-Bihar Express, Puri-Jodhpur Express, they also demand upgradation of the Belpahar Railway Station into a modern one.
