Below-par civil projects: W Odisha Babus make fast buck

Published on:

With unearthing of huge properties worth nearly Rs 1 crore from the possession of an engineer of Rengali block in Sambalpur district, the matter of amassing public money has come to light here.

May it be PDS commodities for the poor people, fertiliser subsidy, and low quality civil construction works or substandard material purchasing for the Government offices; everywhere there is a kickback and it is Government officials who really make a quick buck. At the same time, making false bills without any work by various civil departments of the Government is a common affair here.

Cement concrete roads hardly sustain for six months. NHs and SHs are equally of poor standard since the quantity of pitch in the mixture is much below the proportion. That really enables the engineers or other persons concerned to amass money. And they become men of crores in a few years.

In different platforms, the common people here alleged that Hirakud dam has been there for last 58 years succumbing huge pressure of 630 feet water level. But cement concrete roads hardly sustain for 58 weeks. Most of the schools and hospital buildings in Sambalpur city, leave alone the rural areas, are leaking profusely during the rainy season. This shows the quality of works the Government departments do. But they never fail to make a profit of these low quality ones.
