The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has pulled up Sandhya Rani Jena, former Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) of the Patna police station in Keonjhar district, for allegedly assaulting a youth in the police station.

The OHRC has recommended that Jena neither be given any field duty nor be posted at any police station for a period of two years.“Jena should be sent for training as to how to deal with the accused persons,” the commission added. She was earlier suspended by DGP Abhay over the incident. In March, this year, a video had gone viral in which Jena was seen thrashing a youth with a stick in the police station.

One Raju Mohanty had lodged a complaint with the Patna police regarding a land dispute. He was called to the police station where he was thrashed by Jena before being forwarded to court.

The OHRC had earlier directed the Home Secretary and the DGP to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation to the youth by deducting the amount from the IIC’s salary.
