The Basta Assembly constituency in Baleswar district is all set to witness a straight fight between BJD candidate Nityananda Sahu and Congress’ candidate Jaynarayan Mohanty.
This constituency which comprises of Baliapal block’s 27 Gram Panchayats and Basta block’s 11GPs has been won by Raghunath Mohanty for five times in a row on the Janata Dal and Biju Janata Dal tickets since 1990.
While the BJD denied a ticket to Mohanty this time, it preferred Sahu as he already has experience of being block chairman for three times and a Zilla Parishad Member once. Besides, he has also an added advantage, that his wife is now the Basta block chairperson.
BJD supreme chose to give ticket to Sahu after Mohanty got entangled in the dowry
torture case lodged by his daughter-in-law Barsa Swony Chaudhary .
On the other hand, Congress candidate and former MlA Jaynarayan Mohanty has been making all efforts to win the seat. Though he is an experienced player like Sahu, his major bottleneck this time is that several local leaders and workers have deserted his
party recently.
According to political
analysts, BJP candidate Shyamprasad Behera will also play a game changer role as the Modi wave is already in force.
