The scientific community should carry out research in understanding basic principles and processes in biology research, advised Nobel Prize winner in medicine and physiology Prof Erwin Neher during his visit to the Institute of life Sciences (IlS) here on Monday.

Interacting with faculties and students, Prof Neher said scientific research and knowledge of the world is derived by observation, experimentation and rational analysis. Science and technology interventions are crucial for human welfare and betterment, he maintained.

He expressed concern over the neglect in studying of basic mechanisms in biology research as it is affecting our ability for developing effective products and solutions in the area of human health as well as food security. Prof Neher advised scientists to carry out research in collaboration with universities and other academic institutions so that its results are translated for benefit of the humankind.  He complimented the IlS for its ongoing research focus in the area of cancer research, disease biology and plant and environmental biotechnology.
