Barak missile test-fired from Chandipur

Published on:

Surface-to-air missile (SAM) Barak was launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) launch pad 3 at Chandipur off the Odisha coast at 8.16 am on Thursday.

The medium-range missile, jointly developed by India and Israel, has the ability to hit the target within a 70-km radius.

Notably, the test launch of the Barak had to be conducted on Wednesday, but it was postponed due to unspecified reasons.

It may be mentioned that a multifunctional surveillance and threat alert radar (MFSTAR) was put in place for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile.

The test-firing of the missile was jointly carried out by Indian Defence personnel, the DRDO and the Israel Aerospace Industries, reports said.

For this, the residents around a 2.5-km radius of the launch complex were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Secretary of Department of Defence R&D and DRDO DG Dr S Christopher declared the launch as a major milestone for the IAF towards air defence.
