Bar Council serves ultimatum to Govt on SAT

The Bar Council of Odisha on Thursday extended its deadline allowing more time for the State Government to take a decision on recalling its proposal to abolish the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT).

Serving an ultimatum to the Government to take a decision by the end of November, the Bar Council informed that lawyers across the State would continue their protest against the Government’s move by wearing black badges.

Speaking to reporters here after an executive meeting of the council, its chairman Manas Mohapatra said, “Since the Government claimed to be preoccupied during the past fortnight, no decision on recalling the proposal to abolish the SAT could be taken.

However, sources in the Government have assured us that a decision would be taken in this regard by the end of next month.”

The lawyers across the State would continue their protest until a “suitable” decision is taken with regard to continuation of the SAT, Mohapatra said, adding that after the expiry of the extended deadline lawyers would take “appropriate” steps to fulfil the demand.

He, however, did not spell out what steps the lawyers would take.Notably, while only eight States, including Odisha, have established SAT in the entire country, three of them have already abolished
