The All-India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), Odisha State unit observed the labour Day here on Thursday. A meeting under the chairmanship of AIBOC State president Niranjan Jogania was convened at the Allahabad Bank’s zonal office in the presence of AIBOC State secretary Sambit Mishra.

Chief speaker AK Motayed enumerated sacrifices of labour forces in 1880s and 1890s, when the labour fraternity was unorganised or semi-organised without any regulated working hours set for them. With the declaration of the May Day in 1884, the work duration for labourers was fixed at 8 hours a day starting from May 1, 1886. However, there are still workers working for indeterminate hours, especially in banking sector at the whims of executives, rued Motayed.

The AIBOC members reiterated their demand for sustaining of trade union rights to all officers irrespective of scales, implementation of IlO conventions 87 and 98 and five days a week and regulated working hours for bank officers and employees.

Besides, All India Allahabad Bank Officers’ Association State secretary PK Swain urged upon everyone to observe the day as Demands Day to get a healthy working atmosphere.
