Bank accounts get lakhs from unknown sources

More than 40 bank accounts of the Odisha Gramya Bank’s Batipada branch in Aul block of Kendrapada district were surprisingly credited with lakhs of rupees from ‘unknown sources’ on Thursday.

Hundreds of account holders later thronged the bank to withdraw the amount. While some of them managed to receive the deposited money, many returned home empty-handed as the bank authorities paused withdrawal temporarily in view of the large gathering of people and suspicious sources of the money.

According to reports, the account holders received messages on their mobile phones regarding the credit ranging from several thousands of rupees up to Rs 2 lakh, following which they went to the bank in large numbers for withdrawal.

“Initially, some of the customers withdrew money. Later, we suspected foul play as customers gathered in large numbers. After we came to know about the matter, withdrawal was suspended temporarily. Probe is on to ascertain the source of the money,” said an employee of the bank.
