The BJB (Buxi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar) Autonomous College is the dream of every student. It is the dream of all parents to wish a berth for their children at this institution for pursuing their studies. BJB, the ‘monument of un-aging intellect’, proudly proclaims the glory and the grandeur of academic excellence as its products have scaled dizzy heights of prominence over all spheres of life and society. Its students have distinguished themselves both at home and abroad by carving a niche for themselves. Prof Mohammed Nawaz Hassan is at present the principal of the college who has steered clear the institution in its upward flight to soaring heights of resplendence and glory. A workaholic by nature and disposition, Hassan has left indelible imprints as an academician by serving in nine Government colleges over the period of last three decades. During his tenure, he has had the proud privilege of receiving the World Bank team, the UGC team and the NAAC members in the college and has been able to earn the coveted NAAC ‘A’ level for the college. As the steward of the BJB household, Prof Hassan loathes campus violence and ensures an air of excellent academic life which one can breathe by making a foray while leaping into the diurnal course of the college. A proctor, a friend, a philosopher and a guide over a pedantic exterior, he spares no efforts in arresting the campus violence and mayhem and reaches the young rebels straight way even in rambunctious student rallies by bringing them to the calm of their mind through his convivial repertoire. Parents, guardians and alumni believe that the college shall set even new benchmarks for others to follow under the meaningful leadership of Prof Hassan. In an interview to The Pioneer, Hassan spoke to Sugyan Choudhury at his office at the BJB College.

As an educational administrator, what steps do you contemplate to contain violence by studentsIJ

The first step to contain violence by students is to abolish and ban elections in colleges and universities and replace it by selection of president, secretary, etc., (of Students’ Uniona) strictly on the basis of marks secured in the examinations.

Should student elections in colleges be forbiddenIJ

Yes, completely. Students’ wings of different political parties should be completely abolished.

What about introducing the American system of evaluation, where students judge their teachersIJ

That American system of evaluation should be introduced in colleges and universities (in India). A law must be passed by Parliament forbidding political parties from keeping any link with campuses and students.

What are the plans on your agenda for improving the academic environ of your collegeIJ

Police must be given a free hand to enter the campuses and hostels whenever necessary and to freely arrest the erring, delinquent and undisciplined students. We are going to make further progress in strengthening the academic atmosphere. We are going to provide smart classrooms and provide all facilities for technology-based teaching-learning. We are going to make qualitative improvement in teaching. We are going to strengthen the IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell). We have plans to provide indoor sports facilities. All these measures will bring physical, mental, vital and intellectual development of our learners by extending a holistic approach for their growth and development.

In the background of violence, do you suggest moral education in collegeIJ

Yes. Rules of rusticating undisciplined students should be made hassle-free. A law should be passed making rustication and compulsory TC (transfer certificate) matters out of the jurisdiction of courts.

When there is a clamour for science and technical education, how do you see about the future of the study of humanitiesIJ

Adequate squad work and frequent counselling should be done. Future of humanities is very bright and should be so. Study of humanities should be strongly encouraged. Values of humanities must be inculcated for the betterment of the society.

As an educational administrator of repute, how do you strive for achieving excellence for this premier institutionIJ

Excellence is a continuously moving target that can be pursued through the will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach one’s full potential. Excellence can be identified at the level of the institution in the context of the many different roles like management and service delivery as well as the collective experience of staffs and students and the outputs from study and research. The BJB Autonomous College has been striving for excellence at many levels. In addition to preparing students to be achievers as individuals, the college has furthered innovative pedagogic practices as a leading institution in the State as regards introducing the CBCS pattern of courses of studies, facilitating interactive sessions for students with leaders from corporate world to educationists from abroad and hosting symposia and camps. Through the establishment of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), a constant monitoring is being done to ensure that the institute maintains good standards as per the guidelines prescribed by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council).
