A group of local lawyers led by High Court advocate Deepak Kumar Panda submitted a memorandum to the district Collector on Wednesday demanding a ban on sale and use of glass dust-coated thread or Chinese thread used in kiting with immediate effect to save human lives as well as that of animals in Cuttack. Notably, the extensive use of glass dust-coated Manja thread or Chinese thread in kite flying claimed several lives in the recent past raising serious concern among members of civil societies, advocates and senior citizens in the city. The glass dust-coated threads hit the necks of motorcyclists and cyclists on road and proved hazardous to lives of humans and flying birds, the memorandum said. The extensive use of the glass dust-coated threads in every nook and corner of the city also violates Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees freedom to life and liberties to citizens, the memorandum added.
