The street vendors of Baleswar town protesting against roadside evictions undertaken by the municipal authorities have decided to embark on demonstration and agitation on January 12.
The district administration has been undertaking eviction on various stretches including OT road, College road and Vivekananda Marg since last week of December.
The vendors said that by doing roadside business they were not only selling their wares to customers at cheap rates but also were earning their own bread.
They further alleged that the district administration arbitrarily began eviction exercises flouting the Street vendors (protection of livelihood and regulation of street vending) Act 2014.
Mohini Mohan Parida, secretary of the union, alleged that the evictions were carried out by the district administration without identifying the shops or establishments to be evicted by the Town Vending Committee of which the district Collector is the chairman.
The district administration should stop eviction till it discusses with them (vendors), else the street vendors closing their outlets would embark on agitation on January 12, he warned.
