--For beating parents under influence of alcohol: Baleswar BJP MP Pratap Sarangi is in spotlight for holding a kangaroo court in which he made two youths do sit-ups in full public glare. A video of the incident posted in social media also has gone viral.
Sarangi had got information about illegal liquor sale and consumption near the new railway station area in Gopinathpur. He said that when he got information that five women had come to his house with a complaint that some youths were beating them and creating a ruckus, he rushed to the spot along with some villagers.
“After reaching the spot, the youths admitted that they had committed nonsense under the influence of alcohol. The youths were supposed to be handed over to the police, but when their families and others requested leniency, we asked them to do sit-ups and made them apologize. The youths were also warned that they will be arrested if they indulge in such activities. Later, we visited the houses of those who were selling liquor. As they were not present, the villagers locked their house in the presence of police,” said Sarangi, adding, “I have been working against liquor and drugs for the last 35 years. And I know several tribal families have been ruined due to narcotics and drugs. Their consumption is also causing a lot of law-and-order problems for society.”
