A businessman of Baleswar town was shot dead by unidentified assailants at Digha in West Bengal when he had gone to sell his fish catch in the local market at Mohanaon Sunday.

The deceased, identified as Hemanta Mohaptra (48), received at least four bullets from the miscreants when he was waiting for the fish market to open. He died on the spot. The incident took place at around 3 in the morning.

Mohapatra had gone to Digha by a car along with his driver and manager accompanied by younger brother Susanta Mohapatra. The goons attacked him when he was off the vehicle to pass urine. The miscreants came by a Scorpio car bearing registration number WB-33 4852.

After opening fire, the goons fled from the spot by their vehicle, which was later found at a distance from the spot. The Digha police after seizing the vehicle are verifying the vehicle number with the local RTO. Past rivalry may be the reason behind the murder, said the police probing the case.

The postmortem of the body was carried out in a hospital at Digha.

Notably, Mohapatra, who was in the business of transportation along with trawler and tyre selling, had also faced an attack on his life about a year ago and two persons were arrested in this connection then.
