Balangir SHG women build village road

Published on:

It is common to find rural women forming Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and taking various income-generating activities to improve their livelihood and expand their business further. However, women SHG members taking up road construction is less heard of.

But here, the women members of Maa Ranaghanta SHG and others of Kuhimunda village in Upparjhar grampanchyat of Deogaong block have constructed a road by spending the profits they earned from pisciculture last year."

Prior to this road ,we used to go on the side of paddy fields which was narrow. We called a meeting of our SHG members and decided to construct  a road," said Rukumani Pradhan of Ranaghanta SHG.

"We decided to spend the income generated from pisciculture by SHG members in our village road and we personally contributed physical labour and constructed the road last year. As a result of it we are able to go out with vehicle," said Kanak Sahu of Kuhimunda village .

The Reliance Foundation organised different livelihood training programmes on aquaculture, mushroom cultivation etc. This year the SHG had participated in an aquaculture virtual training programme organized by Reliance Foundation.

Earlier, lots of developmental works like supply of electricity, renovation of pond and pisciculture were taken up there. It is satisfying to note that village women constructed a portion of road.

In a special meeting of Zilla Parshad, the problem of Kuhimunda village was mentioned. Efforts are on to provide a road to that village  either through PMGSY or Mukhyamantri Sadadk Yojana ,informed former Chairman of Deogaon Block Laxman Meher.
