After giving birth to a baby elephant in the middle of the paddy fields near Pahilabar village of Athagarh block on Thursday night, a mother elephant lost its offspring due to the effect of Titli.
Sources said that when a herd of elephants were passing through paddy fields here during the Titli, which led to heavy downpours, the mother elephant gave birth to its baby and the herd tried to take the baby to a safe place but failed.
Due to heavy rains pounding on the newborn jumbo for long hours, it suffered from severe cold and died.
On Saturday morning, nearby villagers rescued the baby elephant from the muddy paddy fields and intimated forest officials.
Later, the forest staffs buried the carcass.
