The Civil Society, Baleswar, has threatened to embark on an agitation on September 22 in protest of non-maintenance of a flyover bridge in the town.
Secretary of the body Manoj Nayak said that although the bridge was built 35 years ago, yet no tangible repair and maintenance were carried out in the period except minor patch works by the Works Department. As a result, the over bridge, which is also known as lifeline of Baleswar town, has become unsafe.
Several fatal accidents occurred due to the dilapidated road condition on the flyover bridge. As the bridge is connecting Baleswar with Sahadevkhunta NH and Remuna, everyday hundreds of buses ply on the bridge. It is connecting the north Baleswar with the town.
All vehicles, including ambulances and fire tenders, use the bridge. Since the repair and renovation works are not carried out by the concerned department, occurrence of major accidents couldn’t be ruled out, Nayak rued, who added that all the requests and demands for the upkeep of the bridge had fallen in deaf ears.
Hence, the agitation call was given, said Nayak. The forum also submitted a memorandum to the district administration on Saturday.
