B’swar Covid-hit doc dies; kin slams apathy

The kin of a deceased doctor alleged gross negligence and callousness  on the part of the health administration for the death of his maternal uncle.

Dr Anupam Mohapatra, an anesthetist who is currently serving in a Kolkata based private Hospital alleged this besides tweeting his concerns and grievances to all concerned, including the CM and the Chief Secretary, etc.

Dr Nihar Ranjan Parida was working at Jayapatna CHC  which is in Bhawanipatna. He was  infected with Covid 19 and died on August 25.

According to reports initially  he was admitted at KIMS  on August 15. There he improved and was discharged on  August 24 . He was diabetic and also having hypertension. But again he  began to develop shortness in breathing.  And  although he was  rushed to Jyoti Hospital, the standalone  hospital of Baleswar district,  the authorities there  refused to admit him.

“They said , they can’t receive him, unless he is referred from the district headquarters hospital (DHH). So, he was taken to the DHH, Baleswar, at around 12 noon.  He was lodged in a TMC at FM College.

"At that time while talking, he was  having breathing difficulties . Then next morning, they called us, and said he expired at 5.30 am. We reached the hospital at 8.30 am and found he was not given adequate treatment  and shabbily handled,”  alleged  Dr Anupam.

“Had he given at least  basic care, even without a ventilator, he could have survived. We suspect whether  there was oxygen in the cylinder  although an oxygen cylinder was found beside  the bed of the deceased,” he further alleged.

Dr Parida was given guard of honour  in the DHH campus  as a corona warrior following his demise.

"What is the use of guard of honour? It is just a showoff.  His dignity and ethics  were compromised. As a doctor, I am  embarrassed and  frustrated. I am ashamed today for me and my fraternity because of the way my uncle was handled and the treatment  he was meted out," Dr Anupam observed further.
