DGP opens Women Support Centre for Twin City
Attitude of people towards women in society needs to be changed,” said Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik on Wednesday while inaugurating Maadhyam, Women Support Centre (WSC), for Twin City.
Praising the effort of the Institute for Social Development (ISD), the Commissionerate of Police and the Oxfam India for jointly launching the facility, Marik said awareness among people would reduce violence against women.
“We should support and respect women as they have an immense role to play to strengthen the society,” he added. The DGP said people should work united to address social problems relating to women.
The social organisations should also work in joint venture to bring change in the society, which now suffers from different complexities, he added.
State Women and Child Development Department Secretary Saswat Mishra said every person has a role to play in bringing change in the attitude of people towards women.
“let’s support each other to help women,” he said.
Outlining the objectives of the WSC, ISD chairperson Namrata Chadha said the WSC would provide a range of services to women and girls to fight violence in domestic sphere, in public and workplaces. The services would range from counselling, emotional support and crisis intervention and would also provide various alternatives like medical aid, livelihood, shelter and legal support, she added.
Oxfam India’s regional manager Akshay Kumar Biswal said the WSC would function from the DCP offices in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
It has trained women counsellors Mina Bhagat and Swapna Tripathy for Bhubaneswar and Rupashree Behera and Soumya Sahu for Cuttack to provide the services to women and girls, he added.
Among others, Twin City Commissioner of Police Dr RP Sharma, Additional Commissioner of Police Dr Santosh Bala, Bhubaneswar DCP Nitinjit Singh and Cuttack DCP Sanjeev Aurora, ISD director Subhashree Das, women activists and around 100 police personnel were present.
