State Women Commission chairperson lopamudra Baxipatra on Wednesday said women are equal citizens and, therefore, should be treated equally in all aspects.

Gender equality and ending violence against women can only be ensured through bringing change in the behaviour of individuals and communities and by ensuring effective implementation of relevant laws, said Baxipatra during a candlelight vigil, organised at lower PMG here to mark the culmination of the Ame Samartha campaign to end gender-based violence.

More than 200 people, including women and youths, joined the vigil, which was organised by the Oxfam India in collaboration with its partners, including the Institute of Social Development, Indira Social Welfare Organisation, Friends’ Association and Rural Reconstruction and Civil Society Resource Facility.

Among others, Oxfam India Regional Manager Akshay Biswal and State Commission for Women Member Snigdha Panigrahi spoke. The Oxfam India in collaboration with its partners organised many events during the 16 days of activities from November 25 to December 10.
