Attack on scribe brought to NHRC notice

Published on:

Rights activist Jayanta Kumar Das on Friday lodged a petition at the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) urging it to set up a committee to inquire into the attack on Munaf Sharif, a video journalist of a TV channel at the Aska Government Girls’ School in Ganjam district.

The petitioner alleged that Sharif had gone to school to collect news in connection with the recent suicide of Jayanti, a student of that school. But one Durga Prasad Panda, a teacher of the school, suddenly assaulted him and even tried to snatch his video camera in front of many supporters of the local BJD MlA

and others.

Stating that the act of the teacher amounted human right violation, Das has urged requested the commission to order the State Government to inquire into the incident, besides taking legal action against the concerned.

He has also urged the NHRC to ensure compensation Rs1 lakh to the journalist.
