Assembly uproar over pregnancy of minor girls

The State Assembly on Tuesday witnessed uproarious scenes as Opposition Congress members insisted on a replay from the Government over the incidence of a minor girl getting pregnant in an SC and ST hostel in Bhubaneswar.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress Legislature Party Leader Narasingha Mishra urged Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro to direct the Chief Minister to order an impartial probe into the incident and make a statement in the House.

Reading a news story from a newspaper, Mishra said the incidents of minor girls getting pregnant in Government residential schools are serious in nature. Recently, four minor girls were found to be pregnant during a medical checkup in a SC and ST hostel in Bhubaneswar. The four underwent further test in the Capital Hospital and one of them found to be pregnant.

“It seems that attempts were made to suppress the incident. It is not understood how three girls were tested not to have pregnancy during tests at the Capital Hospital,” questioned Mishra.

He said that the Government is trying to suppress the matter as the victim, who was staying in the residential school hostel, has been sent to her home.

Mishra demanded that the Government produce its report in the Assembly on the first day of the second phase session on July 12.

As speaker remained silent, Congress members led by Tara Prasad Bahinipati rushed to the Well of the House and shouted slogans against the Government. Then, the Speaker adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

Later, normalcy restored in the House as the Speaker directed the concerned department Minister to conduct a probe and present a report in the House.
