Asok Mohanty granted bail

The Khordha District and Sessions Court here on Friday allowed former Advocate General Asok Mohanty to go on bail against a surety of Rs1 lakh and two bailers.

Mohanty was in judicial custody since his arrest by the CBI for his alleged links with the Artha Tatwa (AT) Group, a key player in the multi-thousand crore chit fund scam in the State.

The court allowed bail to Mohanty as the prosecution failed to prove charges of criminal conspiracy (IPC 120-B) levelled against him. A battery of lawyers led by Asim Amitav Das pleaded the case on behalf of Mohanty.

The court asked Mohanty to cooperate with the CBI in its investigations.

On Thursday, the Odisha High Court had asked Mohanty’s counsel to move the Khordha court for bail and directed the CBI to submit the case diary and related documents on Friday.

Mohanty told the media that he would “unmask” the CBI’s alleged ploy to arrest him.
