Renowned arthroplasty surgeons from across the country attended a two-day State-level conference at the Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here to deliberate on the recent advances in arthroplasty (joint replacement surgery).
Indian Arthroplasty Association president Dr Rajeev Sharma was chief guest at the 4th annual conference of the Odisha Arthroplasty Association (OAACON-2022) on September 17 and 18. The arthroplasty surgeons focused on the challenges and complexities of joint replacement surgeries. In most cases, the recipients are elderly; and, in many cases, they have co-morbidities like diabetes and arthritis.
“As the arthroplasty surgeries mostly involve implants with plastics and metals as their basic elements, chances of infections and complications due to degeneration in the materials would often lead to problems and the experts during this event discussed at length the issues faced by the patients,” explained Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, KIMS, Prof Tanmoy Mohanty.
Prof Mohanty, also the president of the Odisha Arthroplasty Association, underlined that the exchange of ideas is helpful for young arthroplasty surgeons to gain experience from their seniors. He said the conference discussed minimising the risks and complications arising from the joint replacement surgeries.
Odisha Orthopaedic Association president Dr RK Mohapatra and secretary Dr Basanta Kumar Behera and Odisha Arthroplasty Association secretary Dr Debabrata Padhy also spoke at the conference.
