Art teacher 'commits suicide'

The art and physical education teachers on the sixth day of their agitation in front of the State Assembly on Tuesday enacted a street play by taking one of their friends to a buried ground for cremation after he committed suicide for not getting due benefits from the Government.

“We protested against the State Government’s repeated attempts to mislead us by making false promises for permanent jobs which forced us to adopt such unusual methods to highlight our demands,” said Odisha Kala and Krida Sikhyak Mahasangh State secretary Jyoti Prakash Sahoo, under whose leadership the teachers have been agitating for fulfilment of their longstanding demands.

The teachers have been demanding permanent employment, completion of the recruitment process of art and physical education teachers at the earliest and implementation of the December 5, 2013 assurance of the Government. “In the wake of our agitation in December last year, the Government on December 5 had assured us of permanent jobs, but in vain. “We do not understand the attitude of the Government. We are victims of Government apathy and will intensify our agitation,” warned Sahoo.
