Even as the State’s motor vehicle revenue has almost returned to near normal during June 2020 with collection of Rs 96 crore against Rs 112.7 crore collected in June 2019, the year’s first quarter collection was decreased by 58% as only Rs 159.8 crore collected during April-June against Rs 384 crore collected in April-June 2019.
It was revealed at a review meeting held by Transport Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda with senior officers of State Transport Authority (STA) here on 16 July.
It was revealed that Rs 28.66 was collected in April 2020 against Rs166.2 crore collected in Aril 2019.
In May 2020, the revenue collection was Rs 35 crore against Rs 105 crore collected in Aril 2019.
The major portion of the transport revenue has come from registration of new vehicles. As many as 43,000 vehicles were sold in June despite lockdown, only 15,000 sold the previous month. April had recorded sale of 2,599 vehicles only. The sale of vehicles has been picking up since May 3 after partial lifting of lockdown.
About 21,000 vehicles have been sold till July 15, 2020. On an average, about 60,000 vehicles are sold each month during normal time. While 75,000 had been sold in April 2019, the numbers were 66,000 in May and 64,000 in June that year.
It may be noted that the Government has exempted the buses from paying taxes for the first quarter i.e. April-June. No revenue has been collected from issuance of driving licences as tests are not being conducted.
