In a major relief to devotees of Ananta Gopal Ashram at Mahanadi Vihar here, the Supreme Court on Friday granted a stay on the proposed demolition of the religious structure by the district administration.

According to reports, the Supreme Court taking up a Special leave Petition (SlP) filed by a trustee of the ashram issued notices to the State Government and other respondents of the petition and asked them to maintain status quo until further orders.

As the news of the stay order by the apex court reached here, devotees were seen rejoicing over it. This also gave hope to the managements of the other religious structures which are contemplating to approach the Supreme Court.

The huge three-storied Ananta Gopal Ashram, constructed in 1996, was in the line of fire of the district administration as there was a proposal to demolish it.

Meanwhile, the administration continued its drive of demolition of illegally-constructed temples in the city on the day and pulled down as many as six temples located in the OMP and Sikahrpur areas under the Chauliaganj police station.
