Another jumbo found dead in Angul

A carcass of yet another elephant was found in the Nuapada jungle under the Purunakote Forest Range in the Satakosia area in Angul district on Thursday.

Locals first saw the body of the pachyderm lying in the jungle and informed forest officials who later reached the spot and started an investigation.

While the exact reason behind the death of the animal was yet to ascertained, forest officials said the cause of the death would be known only after receipt of postmortem report.

Sources said the tusker aged about seven years was ailing for last few days and locals had spotted it roaming in the forest.

It was alleged that the Forest Department did not take any significant measures to ensure treatment of the calf, for which it died.

Earlier on June 28, a 5-year-old ailing tusker died in the Tikarpada Forest Range under Satkosia Wildlife Division in Angul district, allegedly due to delay in treatment.

Meanwhile, two more persons have been arrested in connection with the death of an elephant due to gunshot wounds in the Narasinghpur forest under the Athagarh Forest Division in Cuttack district.

A special team of the Forest Department nabbed the two accused on Wednesday. Last week, three persons were arrested in this connection. Now the total number of arrests in the case has reached five.

Notably, the tusker was found writhing in pain near a rivulet in the Narasinghpur East Range of the forest division on June 7. The jumbo was shot at five to six places on its body including its head, trunk and leg. After battling for life for nearly three weeks, the tusker succumbed to the injuries during treatment.
