The sale of kidney by Padmini Nayak of Nayaksahi in Mangalabag, Cuttack was surely not a one-off case in Odisha.
The suspicion that an organ sale racket is operating in the State has been proved right after another woman of the same locality lodged a complaint with the local police on Saturday saying she too had to part with her kidney at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam, lured by big money. Sources in the Commissionerate Police said the woman who does not want to be named for fear of attacks by affected people has said in her complaint that she was influenced by a woman of her basti Sarmistha, who is now in police custody, to sell her kidney against a promise of Rs 10 lakh.
Saying that she was never paid even a small part of the promised amount, the woman said she sought police help to get justice.Speaking to mediapersons here, Twin city Commissioner of police (CP) Dr RP Sharma said, “We have taken up her case for investigation and we are on the job.”Police sources said they have detained a person in connection with the new case and hope to get tangible leads after interrogating him.
The police may take Sarmistha on remand to interrogate her further about the organ sale racket, sources confided.
