Another dreaded criminal, Anant Narayan Patnaik, was injured in an encounter with police near Karanjei Chhak under the Aska police limits in Ganjam district early on Friday morning.
The incident took place a day after police had nabbed a notorious dacoit, Babu Nayak, after an encounter near Pathargad in the district.
According to reports, police had tried to stop Patnaik, who was travelling by a motorcycle with his associate near Karanjei Chhak, where cops were frisking vehicles.
In a bid to escape from police action, he opened fire at the cops. The police personnel also opened fire in retaliation, following which he sustained bullet injuries on his right leg.
However, Patnaik’s aide managed to flee from the spot. A pistol and two rounds of live bullets were seized from Patnaik’s possession by the police.
Patnaik was initially admitted to the Aska hospital and later shifted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital in Brahmapur for treatment.
A number of cases have been pending against Patnaik in the Aska and other police stations.
A manhunt has been launched to trace his associate.
