Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) of Angul Dr Shankarlal Agarwal and Banarpal Community Health Centre (CHC) in-charge Dr Deepak Garnaik were suspended in connection with the tubectomies conducted at a sterilisation camp at the Banarpal CHC in the district using a bicycle pump, said Angul Collector Sachin Ramchandra Yadav on Tuesday.
Notably, a surgeon Dr Mahesh Prasad Rout had used a bicycle pump to pump air into the abdomen of women undergoing tubectomy operation at Banarpal CHC on November 28. later the doctor had defended the procedure saying that the use of such pumps was not new practice for him.
The incident drew attention of national and international media and organisations. Even the Central Government and the Odisha Human Rights Commission had sought a report on the issue from the State Government regarding the issue. On December 2, the State Government wounded with criticism from all quarters announced the blanket ban on all sterilisation camps after a high level meeting.
