To achieve the ‘zero casualty’ target set by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik during Cyclone Amphan, the district administrations shifted as many as 1,48,486 people, mostly from low-laying areas in Bhadrak and Baleswar, to different cyclone shelters.
Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Pradeep Kumar Jena informed this on Wednesday. He said evacuated people were accommodated in 2,921 cyclone shelters.
Besides, 1,885 pregnant women were shifted to hospitals for better care during last two days, he said.
While being shifted a hospital, a woman gave birth to a child in a fire ambulance on way to hospital. Condition of both the woman and her newborn is stable, added Jena.
Jena said the Government had already started restoration work in some parts of the affected districts before the Cyclone Amphan made the landfall.
“Route clearing and restoration works have begun in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada and Bhadrak districts. Mostly trees and electric poles have uprooted at many places. Electricity supply was snapped as part of preventive measures. Damage assessment has also begun,” said the SRC.
He said total 36 teams of ODRAF and NDRF have been deployed in the affected districts to tackle any eventuality. He said district Collectors have been asked to submit detailed reports by the evening.
Regarding death of a one-year-old child in Tihidi block of Bhadrak district, Jena said a medical team, including local Tehsildar, visited the spot to verify and later sent the body for post-mortem.
