A three-member National Security Guards (NSG) team on Wednesday met State DGP KB Singh at his camp office here and held discussions with him regarding security preparedness in case of terror attacks.
later, the DGP said it was a routine visit. Sources said that in the wake of the terror attacks on Amarnath pilgrims by Jehadi elements in Anantnag in Jammu and Kashmir, a high alert has been sounded in the whole country to remain alert to prevent further such incidents.
Odisha is also on the radar of terror outfits; and recently, Al-Oaeda and SIMI operatives have been nabbed from the State. In this scenario, the NSG team held discussions regarding security of vital and sensitive installations in the State like the Puri Jagannath Temple, State Secretariat and Assembly and vital defence installations. Though the State police have a counter-terror team, they do not have practical experience of combating the battle-hardened Jehadis.
Besides, the State has a porous 480-km-long coastline. Though some Marine police stations have been set up to maintain vigil, the personnel are still ill-quipped and an adequate number of personnel are yet to be recruited.
Police sources said the NSG team would provide suggestions to the State police handle emergency situations. Besides, mock drill are to be carried out to check preparedness.
