Akash test-fire turns successful

India on Monday, as part of its user trial, successfully test-fired indigenously-developed surface-to-air short-range Akash missile with a strike range of 25 km.

The test was carried out at 3.18 pm from launch Complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur near here. The Air Force version of the missile hit a para-barrel target accurately and the mission was successful, said a senior Defence officer.

The surface-to-air anti-aircraft defence system has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.

The missile capable of carrying a warhead of 60 kg also has the capability to target aircraft up to 30 km away. It is packed with a battery that can track and attack several targets simultaneously.
