The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) on Friday held a demonstration before the Ravenshaw University Vice-Chancellor’s office demanding direct Students’ Union elections in the university in a democratic manner.
The protestors presented a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellors with the signatures of hundreds of students. The AIDSO said that for quality education while there is a requirement of 400 lecturers in the university, presently there are only 100 lecturers. Due to inadequate library and laboratory facilities, the students are facing great inconveniences. Besides, due to shortage of infrastructure, classes are not being held in a conducive manner.
The AIDSO said that instead of solving the problems, with a view to privatisation of the university, seminar fees, hostel fees and admission fees have been hiked exorbitantly; and on the other hand instead of regular courses, self-financing courses are being started. Besides, the authorities are trying to stop Students’ Union elections in the name of curbing indiscipline. Among others, AIDSO Ravenshaw committee’s Saroj Manshingh, Arati Meher, Deb Katli, Papu Parida and Kranti Pradhan led the protestors.
