AIDS-hit widow fails to get land from in-laws to build house

An HIV affected widow, who has been leading a dignified life after getting the help and co-operation from her villagers, is now fighting a lone battle with her in-laws to get a land for constructing an IAY house.

Though she has knocked the doors of the Derabish police station to get justice from police, but the latter have failed to do the needful. As a result, she has been spending sleepless nights.

If sources are to be believed, the 39-year- old widow, Snehalata Behera of laxminarayanpur is suffering from killer disease HIV/AIDs since more than a decade after she got the fatal infection from her husband Akhaya Behera, who died of the disease in 2002. Soon after the death of her husband, she had to face untold miseries. At one time, she even attempted to commit suicide, being failed to cope with the grievous situation, but the villagers came for her rescue and settled her by recruiting her in the local Anganwadi centre as an anganwadi worker.

With the co-operation and help of the locals and local Sarpanch, she has been leading a normal life with her only teenaged son by fighting with the killer disease.

later, she applied to get an IAY house and a latrine at the Derabish block. After knocking the doors of the BDO of Derabish and the district Collector umpteen times by urging before them to provide a pucca house and also a latrine, she recently managed to get the IAY from the block administration as her name was recommended through a special Palli Sabha. But now she has been facing a daunting task to construct her IAY house as Trilochana Behera, the elder brother of her deceased husband, stood as a hindrance to provide her land.

“I asked my elder brother-in-law to divide the land and give a share of my husband. But, now my elder brother-in-law is saying he would not give an inch of land. He is also misbehaving me in regular intervals and also giving life threat. If I fail to construct IAY, then the block authority would take the money provided for IAY. Meanwhile, I am leading a life of mental agony,” quipped Snehalata.

Having failed to get the land share, Snehalata knocked the doors of the Derabish police to provide her justice and also lodged an FIR against her brother-in-law Trilochan Behera on February 10. In the meantime, she has thrice visited to the Derabish police station to get justice. But, the police failed to register a case, added Snehalata.

When contacted, Derabish police station IIC Niranjan Sabar stated that on the FIR of Snehalata Behera, a case has been registered and an enquiry was started.
